Holland is small but beautiful.
From east to west it is only 200 kilometers (125 mi)
From north to south it does not exceed 400 kilometers (500 mi).
Not only is it small, but it is also young.
It was built on the sand, mud and silt that was dragged into the North Sea by the Rhine, Maas and Scheldt rivers.
When the Romans arrived here around the year 50 BC, they saw nothing but impassable and unusable reed land north of Utrecht and they left that area alone.
They settled in the higher parts of the country, say in the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg.
In Maastricht, the Roman bridge over the Maas is still in use.
