DEN OEVER WEATHER
Every morning, the auction floor comes alive with the frenetic bidding process, as buyers compete for the finest seafood hauls. The smell of salty sea air mingles with the excitement of the auction, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors and locals alike. The Fish Auction of Den Oever is not just a place to buy fish; it's a cultural celebration of the sea's bounty.
Den Oever is located on the west side of the Afsluitdijk. Therefore, there are no obstacles to fishing.

From Friesland you arrive in North Holland via the Afsluitdijk. At the place where the fishing harbor Den Oever is located. Years of work have resulted in raising the dike.

The Afsluitdijk separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. Many water sports enthusiasts use the locks at Den Oever. The high cranes are in use when raising the dike. This is necessary against the rise in water levels due to climate change.

The Lighthouse of Den Oever is a 16 meter high, openwork, red, cast iron lighthouse. The tower was built in 1885 by Penn & Bauduin from Dordrecht and was designed by Adrianus Cornelis van Loo. The lighthouse was initially located on the west side of the island of Wieringen near the village of Westerland. Due to the reclamation of the Wieringermeer, the tower was no longer needed there. In 1930 the tower was demolished and rebuilt at the harbor of Den Oever. Two years later he was moved again. It then came to be at the Stevin locks of the Afsluitdijk. (click to enlarge)

the stevin locks

Stevin locks, named after the renowned mathematician and engineer Simon Stevin, are a marvel of human ingenuity and engineering prowess. These impressive hydraulic structures are designed to control water flow and ensure efficient navigation, primarily in areas with significant changes in water levels, such as canals, rivers, and ports.

Stevin locks operate on a simple yet ingenious principle: they use a series of gates and chambers to raise or lower water levels to facilitate the passage of boats and ships. By harnessing the power of water pressure, they allow vessels to traverse varying elevations seamlessly, mitigating the need for time-consuming and costly canal infrastructure.

Throughout history, Stevin locks have played a vital role in transforming transportation and trade, connecting distant regions and promoting economic growth. Their construction has facilitated access to inland waterways, enhancing commerce and cultural exchange between nations.

With its strategic location, the harbor plays a crucial role in fishing and shipping industries. Spectacular sunsets and scenic views make it a popular destination for tourists and photographers alike. The harbor’s maritime heritage and modern facilities create a seamless balance between tradition and progress. Whether you’re a fishing enthusiast, a nature lover, or a history buff, Den Oever Harbor promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you enchanted and longing to return.
