Radboud Castle was built by Count Floris V as one of the five fortresses used to keep the rebellious West Frisians under control.
Floris built these castles in the period 1282-1287. A record pace, normally it took about 10 years to build one castle, let alone five. Radboud Castle is the only castle that has survived.

DEATH OF FLORIS V

Floris V was captured by Gerard van Velsen, along with a few others during a falconry.
Gerard van Velsen  drew his sword and killed Count Floris. Floris was defenseless because a glove had been stuffed into his mouth, his hands and feet were tied and his fingers were chapped or split. When Van Velsen drew his sword, the horse reared in fright, causing Floris to lose both hands due to the first sword blow and fall sideways off the horse. Van Velsen walked up to Floris and kept stabbing at him, followed by two others. The kidnappers then fled. Floris was taken to the Florisberg country house in Muiderberg, where he succumbed to 22 stab wounds.

medemblik now

In 1811 Emperor Napoleon had plans to designate Medemblik as a war port. These plans remained only on paper; The Nieuwe Diep was more favorable. Until 1850, however, the naval training institute in Medemblik remained in what is still called ‘Landswerf’ today. The construction of the Noordhollands Kanaal took away Medemblik’s importance as a port city. In the end, only a fishing fleet remained. But this also disappeared, which meant that the fish auction had to be abolished 30 years ago.
A few years later, the agricultural auction in Medemblik suffered a similar fate.
It was in the sixties of the last century that a new chapter began for Medemblik, namely the gratifying development of Medemblik into an international water sports center

The history of the coat of arms of Medemblik goes back to about 1294. In that year a seal was known with what was then the coat of arms of Medemblik.
The weapon then consisted of a ship with a crew of 13. This goes back to a saga in which it is said that Charlemagne ordered the Frisians to put their laws in writing. Twelve wise men were sent to the king, and when they arrived they asked for another day to think about it. In the end, they decided not to accede to his demands. After a few days of insistence, the king decided to sentence the 12 men to death, they could choose: either be beheaded, or be left out to sea in a ship without oars or rudder. The sages chose the latter, once in the ship and at sea devised sea and comparison with the 12 apostles, the comparison involved being sad after the crucifixion of Jesus. He revealed himself to his apostles after his crucifixion to comfort them. They all started to pray together, after the prayer a man stood at the stern, he led them to land, to Medemblik in particular.
