GRONINGEN WEATHER

Groningen is one of the smaller provinces of the Netherlands in terms of surface area.

In the seventies, Groningen was world famous as the breadbasket of Western Europe with various monocultures. In addition, there is quite a bit of animal husbandry. At over 80%, it still has an exceptionally large number of agricultural areas.

gas reservoir

Under the western part of this area, in the former municipality of Slochteren, lies a large natural gas reservoir.
The reduction of the pressure in the underground layers leads to a measurable drop in the surface level and regularly to non-natural earthquakes.

dolmen

From the only Groninger dolmen until 1982, only one keystone, four side stones and two capstones remain. The most eye-catching capstone is a whopper.

 The only dolmen in Groningen.

Apparently the boulder robbers didn’t know what to do with it. Van Giffen has neatly marked the location of the missing six side stones, the one keystone and the two gate stones with cement plombs, so that you get a good impression of the original size. This would probably have been a dolmen with five capstones.
Close to the hunebed is a large boulder that may have belonged to the hunebed.  The hunebed is located about 1 km west of the road Zuidlaren to Glimmen, just over the provincial border with Drenthe on a well-maintained unpaved road. There is a sign on the main road.
A typical Groningen landscape. Most of the province is still set up for agriculture and horticulture.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the province of Groningen was officially established by Royal Decree on December 30, 1947. However, the coat of arms dates back to the sixteenth century. It came into being after the city and the Ommelanden were united in one region after the city’s reduction in 1594. The provincial coat of arms is therefore a combination of the city coat of arms and the coat of arms of the Ommelanden.
