TERNEUZEN WEATHER

BRUTAL TOWN HALL

The town hall of Terneuzen was completed in 1972 after a design by Jaap Bakema, in the style of brutalism and according to the principles of tectonics. The design is inspired by shipping. The town hall is located on the dike along the Westerschelde.

WILLIBRODUS TOWER

Willibrordus Tower is the remnant of a neo-Gothic Catholic church that was consecrated in 1915 and demolished in 1968. The former presbytery and the monastery chapel are still intact, and the nave of the church is indicated by rows of trees.

Just industry

In the Golden Age, Terneuzen was a fairly small place whose economy was probably based on fishing and (small-scale) port-related storage and transhipment.

The construction of the Ghent-Terneuzen canal in the years 1825-27 was an important driver for the growth of Terneuzen as a port city. After the Second World War, the establishment of industrial companies such as Dow Chemical and Philips led to further growth. To the west of the canal is Dow Chemical’s main branch in Europe. This chemical giant is currently the largest employer in the province of Zeeland.

Excavating the Gent and Terneuzen canal

In 1823, King William I (when Belgium was still part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands) decided to extend the Sassevaart to Terneuzen.
The route ran from Ghent to Sas van Gent, mainly in the old bed of the Sassevaart. From Sas van Gent to Terneuzen the canal ran through a salt marsh area (De Braeckmaninham, Sassegat and Axelse Gat). Two locks were built in Terneuzen: one of 8 meters and one of 12 meters wide.

After the municipal reorganization of 1970, a new municipal coat of arms had to be introduced. It was the wish of the municipality that the arms of Zaamslag, Hoek and Biervliet would be included. For example, the original coat of arms was retained and the lion now wore a shield with the arms of the municipalities that were added to Terneuzen. The shield consists of the coat of arms of Biervliet (with the medals), the coat of arms of Hoek (with the silver castle) and the coat of arms of Zaamslag, the swallow. The crown with five fleurons was replaced by one with three fleurons.
