The coat of arms of Volendam is older than many people initially thought. For several hundred years, the village has carried the coat of arms containing a black foal with a flatfish under the right front leg. As an explanation for the weapon, there is the myth below. The story goes that every evening a foal came from the mainly agricultural village from the Zuiderzee and took a bone with it. Every night a few girls would take the bone from the foal and give him a basket of grass and herbs. One evening the foal did not take the basket, but one of the girls. This girl was called Lisa. According to the story, the Volendam residents kept looking until they found the girl again. Since then, the Volendammer community is no longer a farming community, but a fishing community. The foal in the coat of arms therefore stands for the agricultural character of the village, and the flatfish for fishing.
The Volendams Museum is a historical museum in the Dutch town of Volendam. The museum has a permanent exhibition about the Volendam traditional costume and about historical interiors. The museum shows the Volendam from the time between 1850 and 1950.
