ZOUTELANDE WEATHER

Zoutelande may have got its name from the salty soil that lay there.
Zoutelande is connected with the name of Sint-Willibrord. According to tradition, he drew a cross on the ground here around 690, after which fresh water welled up.

This Willibrordus well is said to have supplied medicinal water and was particularly popular in the Middle Ages.

Zoutelandese Mill

One of the most notable windmills in Zoutelande is the Windmill Zoutelande, which has been standing tall since the 1700s.
This historic landmark is a must-see for visitors to the area, and offers a glimpse into the past when windmills were used for a variety of purposes such as grinding grain and pumping water. The Windmill Zoutelande is open to the public and offers guided tours, allowing visitors to see the inner workings of the mill and learn about its fascinating history. In addition to its historical significance, the Windmill Zoutelande also offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it a popular spot for visitors to take photos and enjoy the scenery.

Originally, Zoutelande was mainly an agricultural village. The character of the village slowly turned into a tourist attraction as the demand for beach recreation increased from about the middle of the 19th century.
Tourism is nowadays the main source of existence of Zoutelande. Zoutelande, together with the beach of Dishoek and Westkapelle, is often called “the Zeeland Riviera”, after the famous south coast of France.

In Zoutelande there is a market on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 21:00 h.

The coat of arms is derived from the coat of arms of Holland. The Van Zoutelande family pretended to be descended from the counts of Holland, hence the barensteel to indicate a younger branch. The coat of arms appears on the coat of arms map of Smallegange from 1696.

Saint Catharina church

The church of Zoutelande is dedicated to Saint Catherine and was first mentioned in 1279. The reformed parish also included Werendijke, Sint Janskerke and Boudewijnskerke in 1574.
