The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch was founded in the twelfth century near a forest of Duke Henry I of Brabant and received city rights between 1185 and 1196. The tree refers to the forest from which the municipality and city owe their name. It used to be one big tree and two smaller trees. Today, it’s just one. In the fourteenth century, the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant that was carried by the dukes from the Brabant-Limburg house was added. They carried the coat of arms, as it is called, quartered with the Limburg lion. It therefore consists of four lions, top left and bottom right the Brabant lion and top right and bottom left the Limburg lion. The same coat of arms with these four lions can be found on more municipalities in North Brabant, for example with the coat of arms of Veldhoven and the coat of arms of Waalwijk. The Habsburg eagle was added to the coat of arms between 1515 and 1519. The duke’s crown and the two wild men on either side of the shield were first depicted in 1670. This was on the façade of the Town Hall.
