Boniface attacked and murdered
In 754, the approximately eighty-year-old Boniface traveled to Friesland with 52 other missionaries in an attempt to Christianize the Frisians. Along the way he had sacred trees cut down and baptized Frisians who converted to the Christian faith. That not all Frisians had much respect for the bishop became apparent on June 5, 754. On his way to a baptism celebration, the archbishop was attacked and murdered that day near Dokkum. About fifty of his followers, including Bishop Eoban of Utrecht, also died. According to some sources, Boniface was reading from the Bible at the time of the robbery. It is not clear whether the robbers wanted loot or were religiously inspired. After his death, the missionary was quickly canonized. It is not certain whether Boniface was actually murdered on June 5. He may have died a little later. Boniface’s body was transferred to the monastery of Fulda, which he himself had founded ten years earlier. The book with which, according to tradition, the archbishop tried to defend himself during the attack is also kept there. Traces of sword strokes are said to still be visible on this so-called Codex Ragyndrudis. Place of pilgrimage From the end of the nineteenth century, Dokkum became a place of pilgrimage because of the martyrdom of Boniface. All kinds of bones of the saint suddenly surfaced, all of which later turned out to be false.
The origin of the coat of arms probably comes from the great seal that was used in Dokkum in the 15th century. That great seal consisted of a large church (the Abbey Church), above which a sun, a moon and 12 stars were depicted. On a smaller stamp there were three celestial bodies left with a crescent above them (that is a waxing moon, so in the first quarter). This is the probable origin of the city coat of arms of Dokkum.
However, this is not the only explanation. Another explanation, according to tradition, is that the crescent was added after the conquest of Egyptian Damietta in 1219 during the Fifth Crusade. The Dokkumers, together with the Haarlemmers, played a special role in this.
