The sea lock

In the Middle Ages, the Vecht was a very important shipping link between (the predecessor of) the Zuiderzee, from which Northern Europe could be reached, and the Rhine, which gave access to what is now Germany, among other things.Dorestad and later the city of Utrecht owed their economic prosperity to this.
When Utrecht was occupied by the French army in 1672, Holland seized the opportunity and started building the lock in Muiden. The lock had three primary tasks: a lock for shipping traffic between the Zuiderzee and Vecht, the defense of the country against the Zuiderzee and a military function. Muiden was part of the Dutch Waterline. After the closure of the Muiden fortress in 1926 and the closure of the Zuiderzee by the Afsluitdijk in 1932, the importance of the lock decreased. In March 1975 the restoration and modernization of the lock was started. In order to preserve the original appearance of the lock, various parts such as bridge railings and lampposts were removed and later replaced after being refurbished.

Muiden has its own legend. Fishermen catch a mermaid. When they consider who to give her to, the mermaid proposes to release her, because she will not survive more than an hour on land, and this in return for rich catches and full nets. When they let her go, she says/sings: Muiden will remain Muiden, Muiden will never last, whereupon she dives into the depths and is never seen again. In the meantime many towns and villages have flourished or even disappeared, but Muiden will remain Muiden. The mermaid can still be found in the coat of arms of Muiden.

Murder of Floris
This is a portrait of Count Floris V, decorated with feathers, precious stones, and pearls. He was murdered by noblemen in 1296 during a falcon hunt, and imprisoned in Muiderslot castle for five days before his death. The castle was managed by guardians for their lord, including bishops or landgraves. In the 16th century, the Geldersen briefly owned the castle. It was taken in 1577 during the Eighty Years’ War for William of Orange.

Muiden castle

The Muiden Castle, or so the Dutch call it, The Muiderslot was built in 1285 with one goal: defense! Over the years, the castle has been variously used, inhabited, occupied, demolished, rebuilt and refurbished.
It has been a national museum since 1878. Shortly before that it was completely dilapidated and even almost demolished. That did not happen thanks to the interference of King William I.
The castle is a square moated castle. At each corner of the castle is a round tower and within the walls is a large building with stepped gables. The castle has a moat with a drawbridge. Surrounding the castle are a restored vegetable garden and a herb garden.
The castle was built at the mouth of the Vecht in the Zuiderzee, where today the IJmeer is located. Muiden with its harbor is located directly at the castle.
By means of a chain across the river Vecht, Count Floris V was able to levy tolls on the passing ships. It is possible that the castle already existed at that time and the count merely bought it.

fort pampus

Pampus is the most visited fortress of the Defense Line of Amsterdam with more than 60,000 visitors annually. In the summer months there is an event almost every weekend. Every summer you can enjoy culinary delights on Forteiland Pampus during Zomerlicht; and in winter during Winter Light.
Pampus (officially Fort aan het Pampus) is a fortress island in the part of the IJmeer that belongs to the municipality of Gooise Meren. The artificial island was constructed in 1887 as part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam to defend the shipping channel Pampus against attacks from the Zuiderzee. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the Dutch government was afraid of an attack on Amsterdam. A fortress was built around Amsterdam, the Defense Line of Amsterdam.
