LARGEST PROVINCE

Gelderland is bisected by the Rhine with its branches Waal and IJssel. The Maas forms the border with North Brabant. The highest point of Gelderland is the Signal Imbosch (109.9 m) on the Veluwe.

Gelderland is, by land area, the largest province in the Netherlands. The province has 51 municipalities. Nijmegen, Apeldoorn and Arnhem are the largest cities. Gelderland has various regions, including the Veluwe, the Gelderse Vallei, the Betuwe, the Bommelerwaard, the Tielerwaard, the Land van Maas en Waal, the Rijk van Nijmegen, the Liemers and the Achterhoek. The Arnhem Nijmegen Region is one of the larger urban areas in the Netherlands.

This Hanseatic city has become especially famous for its fishing. The historic center has a lot of charm and consists of old buildings and small cobbled streets. Today you will find restaurants, shops and small specialty shops in the various buildings. The city is surrounded by canals that are partially filled in. You can admire the old city walls in Elburg. An interesting sight in Elburg is the Vischpoort. The city gate dates from the 15th century and is the only remaining city gate of the town. The port of Elburg is also a must to visit. Archaeological finds indicate that about 70,000 years ago human habitation was already in place in the area where the city of Arnhem is now located. As hunter-gatherers, Neanderthals generally had no fixed abode, they roamed the region in search of prey. The oldest remains of modern humans in the region date from about 5000 BC. Remains of a hunting camp have been found at a depth of two meters in the area of ​​the Schuytgraaf district.

OPERATION MARKET- GARDEN

During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the Allies tried to get hold of a number of important bridges in North Brabant and Gelderland.
It was then necessary to advance to the Ruhr area, the heart of the German war industry, in order to end the war. The penultimate bridge, the Waalbrug in Nijmegen, was captured but the Allied offensive came to a halt at the bridge in Arnhem. The battle of Arnhem was literally ‘a bridge too far’. Nijmegen remained at the front for a long time after the failure of Operation Market Garden, while Arnhem was only liberated in April 1945.

The first recognized Count of Gelre must have been Gerard I van Gelre (Count of Wassenberg). HARDERWIJK

Until the closure of the Zuiderzee in 1932, fishing also played an important role in the city. They fished for, among other things, herring, anchovy, eel and shrimp. On average 10 to 15 percent of the working population worked in this sector. In its heyday, the fishing fleet had about 130 to 160 registered fishing vessels.
