FRIESLAND

KINGDOM OF FRIESLAND

Frisian King Radboud refuses baptism by bishop Wolfram around 700

During the migrations in the 4th century, other Germanic tribes settled in the Frisian areas, taking over the name of the country they landed in and of the people who had traditionally lived there.
We know four Frisian kings by name: Audulf, Aldgisl, Radboud (Redbad) and Poppo. The Frisian kingdom extended from the Zwin to the Weser, 19th and 20th century historians will later refer to this zone as ‘Greater Friesland’. In 734 the kingdom was annexed by the Frank.

BONIFACE

Boniface comes from England and wants to become a monk.

He goes to the Netherlands to convert the Frisians there.
He wants to turn the unbelieving Frisians into Christians. In this Boniface helps another English monk, Willibrord. Willibrord has been involved in the spread of the Christian faith for a long time. But that is not so easy. Many Frisians resist. In 754 Boniface moves north with a group of followers. They set up a tent camp near Dokkum. On June 5, 754, Boniface is murdered there by FrisiaBoniface

In the battle against the water, the entire coast  is surrounded by dikes.
This is the dike at Hindeloopen with a view on the IJsselmeer.

Friesland is known for its watersports. In cities like Dokkum sailing and staying on the water is the most important leisure.
