Bulb cultivation and trade brought employment and prosperity with it. Today, flower bulbs are widely exported to more than a hundred countries around the world. The colorful fields in the bulb region attract hundreds of thousands of viewers from home and abroad every spring.

In the Middle Ages Lisse was still small. Around 1500 there were about 50 houses. Poverty reigned due to ongoing wars. The inhabitants lived among other things from agriculture, livestock and peat cutting. The flower bulb culture arose in the following centuries. The sandy soils in the area turned out to be very suitable for this cultivation, if properly fertilized. Slowly but surely the surrounding old dunes were further excavated. Only a part of the dunes and extensive forests remained.
