The Keukenhof is a flower park northwest of Lisse, in the Dutch province of South Holland, where bulbous plants from horticultural companies from the bulb region are exhibited every spring. Established in 1949, the 32-hectare park attracts more than a million visitors from around the world every year. The Keukenhof is located on part of the estate of Keukenhof Castle.
The Keukenhof estate was founded in 1642 when a country house was built in the Keukenduyn of Teylingen Castle. Keukenduyn derived its name from the fact that the proceeds of the dune area such as game, cattle and all kinds of herbs and berries were intended for the household or kitchen of Teylingen castle. The flower bulbs are planted in three months (October to December) by forty gardeners. In order to anticipate the capricious milder winters, approximately 30% more bulbs will be planted in 2020 than before. More than seven million crocuses, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, lilies and other bulbous plants can be seen.
The keukenhof mill
The Keukenhof mill is a mill on the site of the Keukenhof in the Dutch town of Lisse. The mill originates from Scharmer, where it was built in 1892 as a polder mill. It was still a ground sailor there. In 1957 the mill was moved to the Keukenhof grounds, as a gift from the Holland-America Line. In the Keukenhof, the mill only functions as an ornamental object. The mill can rotate and has a flight of 17.90 meters. It is covered with roofing felt.
Keukenhof castle
In the Middle Ages, game was hunted in the wide strip of inner dunes, called Keukenduyn, for the kitchen of Slot Teylingen.
Here Jacoba van Beieren lived in exile for the last four years of her life. The then name Keukenduyn is later used as the name of the estate: Keukenhof.
Keukenhof Castle in the South Holland town of Lisse was originally built in 1642 as a classicist country house by Adriaen Maertensz.
