Haven aan het reitdiep
The picturesque harbor at Het Reitdiep in Zoutkamp is a tranquil gem nestled in the heart of this historic fishing village. De slag om Zoutkamp
Zoutkamp was strategically located at the mouth of the Reitdiep in the Lauwerszee. Until the completion of the Eemskanaal in 1876, this was the only access to the city of Groningen from the sea. During the Eighty Years’ War, a Spanish garrison was stationed there. In 1576, the Soltecampe redoubt was built as a stronghold of the Spanish king’s troops. In the years that followed, from Friesland, which was under the administration of the later Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, Sea Beggars raided the villages near Zoutkamp and Warfhuizen and Zuurdijk were set on fire. The rebels also made plans to capture the forts and defences in the Ommelanden in order to attack the city of Groningen. In October 1589, Willem Lodewijk sailed with 400 men from Oostmahorn to Soltkamp and managed to capture this place during the Battle of Zoutkamp. Zoutkamp was a military stronghold where mainly soldiers lived.
