There are several designated walking routes in the town, including the Ommetje Breukelen, which takes about 45 minutes, and the longer route of Landgoederenroute, which takes about three hours. The coat of arms is a continuation of the lordship coat of arms of Breukelen. This already occurred in the 18th century. The coat of arms was also carried by the Van Breukelen van Nijenrode family. The coat of arms itself is composed of the arms of the Nijenrode and Persijn van Velsen families. Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel built Nijenrode Castle around 1275. His coat of arms consisted of a golden field with a red bar. Gijsbrecht II van Nijenrode, Lord of Nijenrode, included the coat of arms of his mother Maria van Persijn van Velsen in his coat of arms. However, the Persijn van Velsen family carried red instead of blue Andreas crosses.
