BEAUTIFUL PROVINCE

SUMMER IN GIETHOORN
Overijssel is a beautiful province in the Netherlands. The province is a wonderful destination for a holiday or a weekend away. It is a popular place for hiking and cycling enthusiasts. You have beautiful nature reserves in Overijssel, such as Het Vechtdal, the Sallandse Heuvelrug and the Weerribben-Wieden. But even if you are not much of an active person, there is still plenty to do. Overijssel has a number of beautiful Hanseatic cities that you can discover, such as Zwolle, Kampen and Deventer. In addition, Giethoorn is of course a must see if you are in the area.
The coat of arms can be traced back to the period in which Emperor Charles V, who was already Count of Holland, obtained control over the area of Overijssel (1528).
The earliest depiction of the coat of arms appears on a seal stamp of the Dutch audit office with a shield with the Dutch lion on it, with a blue crossbar representing the river IJssel.
It is therefore a striking weapon.

CITY BRIDGE OF KAMPEN

The bridge is four hundred meters long and twenty meters wide, twice as wide as the original bridge.
The shipping passage has been doubled to thirty meters. The bridge rests on concrete abutments at the ends and is supported in the river by four intermediate supports. The massive pillars of the old bridge have been replaced by more slender ones that cause less congestion and therefore contribute to a better water flow. The four new steel lifting towers are composed of steel box columns with a concrete filling.

River ijssel

Already in the early Middle Ages, the cities of Zutphen (as a center of power) and Deventer (as a trading center) flourished thanks to their location on the IJssel. The Vikings could also reach and plunder the settlements via the IJssel. A documented looting took place in 882. Archaeological traces of it have been excavated in Zutphen and Deventer. Later, in the time of the Hanseatic League (+/- 1250-1450), the IJssel was an important international trade route; The cities along the IJssel: Doesburg, Zutphen, Deventer, Hattem, Zwolle and Kampen were therefore affiliated with the Hanseatic League.
