brouwersdam
SLUICEWAY
The construction of the Brouwersdam influenced the surrounding nature.
After the closure of the dam, the water in the Grevelingen stopped overnight. This made the water brackish, causing several plant and animal species to disappear from the area. To restore nature, Rijkswaterstaat opened the Brouwerssluis in 1978. The water is therefore just as salty as in the North Sea. Slowly plants and animals come back to the area. There are plans to make a passageway in the Brouwersdam for the reduction of limited tides. After the closure in 1971, a unique nature reserve was created in the Grevelingen, but due to a lack of flow, oxygenlessness is becoming more and more common in parts of the lake. The tide will solve this. This development is good for nature.
bROUWERSDAM full of life
The Brouwersdam closes off the Brouwershavense Gat and this created the Grevelingenmeer, the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe.
Construction of the six-kilometer-long dam began in 1962. The Brouwersdam was built between 1962 and 1971 and connects Goeree-Overflakkee with Schouwen-Duiveland. The N57 motorway runs over it. The estuary between Goeree and Schouwen was up to 30 meters deep here. As with other dams, caissons with holes were lowered, allowing the tides to continue during the construction of the dam.

When designing this Delta Work, Rijkswaterstaat did not only look at technical requirements for the first time. They also looked at recreational opportunities and how the dam would fit into the landscape as well as possible. Landscape architects were therefore given a major role in the design process.

On the sea side there is a lot of kitesurfing, and both on the sea side and on the side of the Grevelingenmeer a lot of windsurfing is done. In the summer Concert at SEA is an annual three-day festival.
