Hindeloopen is in de 8e eeuw ontstaan als een kleine nederzetting, maar groeide uit tot een belangrijke plaats. Doordat de Zuiderzeekust veranderde, kwam Hindeloopen aan zee te liggen en werd Hindeloopen een handelsplaats. Deze kreeg in 1225 stadsrechten en is een van de Friese elf steden. Ondanks dat de stad geen haven had, maar slechts een rede in de Zuiderzee, was Hindeloopen lange tijd een belangrijke aanlegplaats voor schepen vanuit Amsterdam die op doorreis waren. In 1368 tekende de stad een overeenkomst met de Hanze. De stad zou geen Hanzestad worden maar wel nauw verbonden blijven met deze handelsorganisatie. De Hindelooper Grootschippers voeren in hun fluitschepen naar de Oostzee om handel te drijven. Ze verkochten in de Oostzeelanden veel Nederlandse producten zoals jenever en wollen stoffen. Op de terugreis naar Hindeloopen werd hout getransporteerd naar Amsterdam en de Zaanstreek. Uit deze periode stammen ook de bijzondere cultuur, de Hindelooper schilderkunst en de Hinderlooper klederdracht.

Zijlroede
De Zijlroede is een kanaal bij een zijl in de stad Hindeloopen, gemeente Súdwest-Fryslân in de provincie Friesland.
De tweehonderd meter lange Zijlroede begint bij het kanaal Indijk (Yndyk) en loopt in noordelijke richting onder de Wipbrug door naar de Sluis Hindeloopen. In oostelijke richting is er verbinding met de Oude Oostervaart (Aesterfaart). De Zijlroede maakt deel uit van de route van de Elfstedentocht.
Het wapen van Hindeloopen werd tussen 1818 en 1984 door de Friese gemeente Hindeloopen gebruikt als gemeentelijk wapen. Het wapen toont een verrassend hinde en is daarmee spreken wapend, echter oudere wapens getoond een hert met horens. In 1984 ging de gemeente op in de nieuwe ontstane gemeente Nijefurd.
In 1355 werd riet een hinde als symbool voor Hindeloopen gebruikt, ook in de eeuwen werden hinden op zegels gebruikt. In 1496 gaat het om een liggende hinde in een omheining en een ander afgebeeld een prachtige hinde tussen bomen. Onder andere op de Gedenkzuyl der VII verëenigde Nederlanden uit 1793, tevens op een prent van Jacob Folkema, 1702 – 1725 staat een conventionele wapen in blauw met daarna een groene schilvoet een groene boom met aan weerzijden waardoor een mannelijke en natuurlijke klimmend hert in hun natuurlijke kleur
Sluis Hindeloopen
De Sluis Hindeloopen is een schutsluis in de Friese stad Hindeloopen. De sluis vormt de verbinding voor de pleziervaart tussen de Zijlroede en de haven aan het IJsselmeer. De sluis in Stavoren was er al in de 17e eeuw. Over de sluis ligt ook een brug.
Bij de sluis staat de sluiswachterswoning het Sylhús met een houten 19e-eeuwse klokkentorentje. Aan de noordzijde staat een zogenaamde leugenbank met een gevelsteen waarop de wonderbaarlijke visvangst is afgebeeld. In de jaren zeventig zijn deze bouwwerken gerestaureerd.
