The sea lock
In the Middle Ages, the Vecht was a very important shipping link between (the predecessor of) the Zuiderzee, from which Northern Europe could be reached, and the Rhine, which gave access to what is now Germany, among other things.Dorestad and later the city of Utrecht owed their economic prosperity to this.
When Utrecht was occupied by the French army in 1672, Holland seized the opportunity and started building the lock in Muiden. The lock had three primary tasks: a lock for shipping traffic between the Zuiderzee and Vecht, the defense of the country against the Zuiderzee and a military function. Muiden was part of the Dutch Waterline. After the closure of the Muiden fortress in 1926 and the closure of the Zuiderzee by the Afsluitdijk in 1932, the importance of the lock decreased. In March 1975 the restoration and modernization of the lock was started. In order to preserve the original appearance of the lock, various parts such as bridge railings and lampposts were removed and later replaced after being refurbished.

Muiden has its own legend. Fishermen catch a mermaid. When they consider who to give her to, the mermaid proposes to release her, because she will not survive more than an hour on land, and this in return for rich catches and full nets. When they let her go, she says/sings: Muiden will remain Muiden, Muiden will never last, whereupon she dives into the depths and is never seen again. In the meantime many towns and villages have flourished or even disappeared, but Muiden will remain Muiden. The mermaid can still be found in the coat of arms of Muiden.
