The Battle of Nijmegen
The Battle of Nijmegen or Liberation of Nijmegen took place from 17 to 20 September 1944, as part of Operation Market Garden during World War II.
The main objective of the Allied forces was to capture the Waal bridge and Spoorbrug intact and to ensure a fast connection to Arnhem, where three bridges were fought for. The capture of Nijmegen took longer than expected, claimed hundreds of civilian casualties and caused great damage. With the Waal crossing on 20 September, both bridges were finally taken, but it was too late to relieve the British 1st Airborne Division in Arnhem. Partly because of this major delay, Operation Market Garden, as a whole, became a failure.

anniversary in 2005. During the Roman Empire, Nijmegen was part of the Limes,
the border between the Roman Empire and the various so-called Germanic territories.
From 71 to 104 the 10th legion of the Romans was stationed in Nijmegen.
During the Roman rule a large fortress (castrum) was built on a hill on the Waal, a
few parts of it are still left. There are also regular excavations in which
Roman remains are found. Along the Waal where the Waterkwartier is now located,
a new settlement arose that was granted city rights by the Roman emperor Trajan
(originally from Itálica, Spain) between 98 AD and 102 AD under the name Ulpia
Noviomagus Batavorum.
