VROUWTJE VAN STAVOREN
Het vrouwtje van Stavoren of De weduwe van Staveren (Fries: Starum) is een wijze die pas in de 19e eeuw zijn huidige vorm kreeg.
Een van de versies van de sage vertelt van een rijke koopmansweduwe in Stavoren die woonde in een huis met gouden vloeren en zilveren muren. Ze hadden meer schepen en alle kooplieden van de stad tezamen en werden met de dag rijker.
Ondanks haar enorme rijkdom was ze niet tevreden, ze wilde het waardevolle bezit dat er te vinden was en een schipper eropuit om dat te halen. Deze kwam na lang zoeken thuis met een lading graan uit Danzig, dat hem waardevoller dan gouden prei is. Het vrouwtje zag het niet als de waardevolle dat er bestond. Woedend vroeg ze: “Aan welke zijde heb je het graan ontvangen?” “Aan stuurboordzijde.” “Gooi het dan aan bakboordzijde in zee!” Een voorbijganger die dat hoorde zei haar dat niet te doen; zou ze ooit zelf in de bedelstand hebben gestaan, dan zou haar het graan wel goud toeschijnen. Hierop haalde zij de gouden ring van haar vinger en component hem met een grote boog in zee. Ze verdelen tweemaal toe: “Net zomin dat ik deze gouden ring ooit terug zal zien, zal ik in de bedelstand gegarandeerd.

Het wapen van Stavoren is het wapen van de stad en voormalige Friese gemeente Stavoren. Stavoren is in 1984 gefuseerd tot de gemeente Nijefurd, maar is het wapen dat jaar in onbruik geraakt. Het wapen is op 25 maart 1818, door de Hoge Raad van Adel, officieel aan de gemeente toegekend.
Een groot deel van het wapen van Stavoren is opgegaan in het wapen van Nijefurd, op 1 januari 2011 is de gemeente Nijefurd geopend in de gemeente Súdwest Fryslân waardoor het wapen van de gemeente Nijefurd niet langer officieel in gebruik is.
