The Aeolus is a corn and hulling mill in Wemeldinge. It was named after the Greek god of the wind, Aeolus.
The mill was built in 1869 as revenge for a miller’s servant who had the current De Hoop mill built a little further on. The Aeolus is therefore higher and larger than De Hoop. After a fire in 1888, the mill was restored. Until 1968, the mill operated on wind power. The mill is now owned by the municipality of Kapelle. The mill is fully equipped with 3 pairs of grinding stones and a ‘peeling stone’ made of wood and tin. The rods of the mill are more than 24 meters long and are equipped with the old Dutch fencing with sails. These rods are of the Pot brand and are the oldest rods still in use in the Netherlands, dating from 1871.
Wemeldinge, situated in the beautiful province of Zeeland, is a charming and delightful village.
The village enjoys an idyllic location on the Oosterschelde, a picturesque and serene body of water, and the mouth of the Channel through South Beveland. Wemeldinge is part of the larger municipality of Kapelle, and is home to approximately 3000 inhabitants. Interestingly, the village’s roots can be traced back to 3 vliedbergen – ancient earth mounds used to protect against flooding- and one of these historic mounds is still visible today. Whether you’re a history buff interested in learning more about the village’s past, or simply looking for a sweet and peaceful place to unwind, Wemeldinge is the perfect destination. With its natural beauty and quaint charm, it’s no wonder the village has become a beloved destination for visitors from all around the world.
WATER LEVEL HOUSE
Located at the lock complex, stands the historic and iconic peilhuisje also known as the water level house.
This building was once the guard’s quarters, but now it serves a great purpose for the community. It possesses a magnificent clock that plays a crucial role in the daily lives of the citizens. Notably, the clock indicates the water level in the Oosterschelde and its distance above or below N.A.P (Normal Amsterdams Peil). Due to its significant role, the peilhuisje is an essential landmark that is highly valued by the residents and tourists alike. Therefore, it stands as a beautiful and important reminder of the crucial function played by the lock complex in the surrounding community. A well-preserved piece of history, it is a unique and worthwhile to visit and behold.

The coat of arms is a reference to the patron saint of the village: Andrew, who was crucified on an X-shaped cross. The coat of arms has been used as a coat of arms since the 17th century. When applying for the coat of arms in 1813, the municipality gave another explanation, namely that it was probably four mill blades, “which can be said to be teeming strangely and therefore taken as a name coat of arms after the name of the Glory Wemelinge”.
Weumelinge
In the last century ‘Weumelinge’ was known for fishing and oyster farming, but especially for the parlevinkers. Inland navigation skippers in the Canal through Zuid-Beveland, who were waiting in front of the locks, could do their shopping with them. It was an atmospheric affair! In 1992 the Canal was widened by Zuid-Beveland and laid around Wemeldinge.
The locks became superfluous and the activity around them disappeared. But Wemeldinge went to work and on the site of the old locks there is now a beautiful marina, a beautiful boulevard and beautiful houses.
Today, tourism is the main source of income. Wemeldinge has a large marina, there is a lot of water sports and there are many walking and cycling routes. On the north side of the village is Oosterschelde National Park, the largest nature park in the Netherlands.
