The Zeeland bridge is a traffic bridge over the Oosterschelde with a total length of 5022 meters.
It connects Noord-Beveland with Schouwen-Duiveland, and thus ensures a shorter connection with the towns of Middelburg and Goes on the southern side, and Zierikzee and Bruinisse on the northern side. The bridge is part of the provincial road N256.
The money for the construction of the bridge had been borrowed by the Province of Zeeland. In order to be able to repay the loan, tolls had to be paid for each passage at Colijnsplaat . Until 1989 the toll was used for the repayment, after which the toll was paid into a maintenance fund. On January 1, 1993, the bridge became toll-free. The bridge was the longest bridge in Europe upon completion.
On November 29, 1993, 21-year-old Danny Harte, co-driver in a van, ended up in the water after a head-on collision on the bridge. Harte’s body has never been found. For traffic there are two lanes and a narrow bike path. There is no emergency lane and there are no fallback options in the event of a breakdown.
In 2000, the bridge was made more traffic-friendly: the railings along both sides of the roadway were replaced by concrete vehicle barriers and an overtaking ban was introduced, indicated by a double continuous line between the lanes.
